| "Best Buddies Hong Kong" Movement |
| |
Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization
dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with
mental handicap by providing opportunities for
one-to-one friendships.
Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy
Shriver, Best Buddies
(www.bestbuddies.org) is a vibrant,
international organization that has grown
from one original chapter to more than 1,200
middle school, high school and college
campuses across the country and
internationally. Best Buddies programs
engage participants in each of the 50 United
States and countries on six continents.
In April 2004, Fu Hong Society was
invited by Best Buddies International to
promote Best Buddies movement in Hong Kong.
With the establishment of Best Buddies Hong
Kong, we offer three programs - Best Buddies
Secondary Schools, Colleges, and Citizens.
We now have a total 260 participants from
three secondary school chapters, four
college chapters and citizen chapters.
By becoming a buddy, together they
share the same activity, such as outing,
meal picnic, etc. "It is through Best
Buddies that I know people with mental
handicap do not need sympathy or pity. They
would enjoy friendship and care from the
others." A peer buddy said. |

You may have many good friends around
you, yet you may be the only good friend to the
people with mental handicap. In the past,
individuals with mental handicap lacked the
opportunity to have friends outside of their own
special education classroom. By joining Best
Buddies Hong Kong and becoming a Secondary
School Peer Buddy or College Buddy, participants
offer a Buddy the chance to explore a new way of
life.
Secondary schools or colleges joined Best
Buddies will set up a chapter in their
schools or colleges and recruit interested
students. Our Society will match people with
mild to moderate mental handicap to the
students according to their sex. They will
then become buddies and establish one-to-one
friendship. The buddies can keep in touch by
meeting, phone or letter, etc.
